Welcome to Around the House with KPLU!

It’s been said that “a home is a man’s castle,” and if this is indeed true, KPLU listeners are certainly the Lords and Ladies of their respective manors.  Whether renting their first apartment or outfitting their first mansion, KPLU listeners are concerned with matters of the home and how their homes fit in to their greater community and environment.

With this in mind, KPLU has created Around the House with KPLU, a participatory web feature on kplu.org.  Around the House with KPLU is a place where KPLU listeners can connect with experts and each other on matters relating to their homes, their neighborhoods, and their environment.

Each month you’ll find a new home improvement project submitted by a listener, with advice from the experts at the Master Builders Association as to how to fix up their home.  In addition, listeners will be invited to share their ideas for each month’s project, or share stories of similar projects they’ve done with their homes.  From energy-saving tips, to green architecture, solutions for small-home living, to decorating on a budget, Around the House with KPLU is an evolving source for information and ideas.

“Home” extends beyond the boundaries of our yards, as well.  KPLU is aired from the beautiful Northwest, and is locally heard up and down a stretch of land dotted with mountains, water, and lush forests.  The people who have chosen to make Washington State and British Columbia their home have a strong connection to and pride in their postcard-perfect landscape, and would like to see that it remains as beautiful for their great-grandchildren as it is today.

To this end, Around the House with KPLU is about more than just making our houses and apartments more comfortable and attractive.  It’s also about learning and implementing resource-consciousness into our home improvement projects.  It might mean learning simple, no-cost ways to reduce energy consumption or improve air quality in your home, or it might mean building an entire house using “Built Green” principles.  Every listener can get involved and every listener can make a difference.

We hope you’ll enjoy Around the House with KPLU, have some fun, learn a lot, and gain insight into how we can all help make the Puget Sound a better place to live!
