Dave Brubeck and Keith Jarrett Headline 13th Annual Earshot Jazz
Festival
KPLU
is pleased to co-sponsor the 2001 Earshot Jazz Festival. The Festival
runs from October 25 through November 4 with more than 30 jazz
events throughout the Seattle area.
Headlining
this year's festival are the legendary Dave Brubeck Quartet and
the Keith Jarrett Trio with Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette.
Called "Seattle's most important annual jazz event" by Down Beat
magazine, this year's festival presents more than 100 different
artists in performance and educational settings at 15 different
concert halls, clubs, schools, and community centers throughout
the greater Seattle area.
Commenting
on the festival, KPLU Program Director Joey Cohn said, "We are
excited about being able to partner with Earshot as they bring
to Seattle two of the greatest talents in jazz; Keith Jarrett
and Dave Brubeck have become favorites among KPLU listeners. In
addition, this year's festival gives KPLU listeners the opportunity
to see many of the musicians they enjoy on the radio." You can
purchase music by many of the artists through the public store
at kplu.org.
This
year's festival includes Don Byron's Music for Six Musicians,
Camaroonian bassist Richard Bona and his band, and All-Star tribute
to Rahsaan Roland Kirk with Steve Turre, James Carter, Vincent
Herring and others, Chicago tenor titans Von Freeman and Fred
Anderson, pianist Kenny Werner, Myra Melford's Crush Quartet,
jazz visionaries William Parker and Hamid Drake and more.
The centerpiece
of this year's festival is a special series of concerts with guitar
wizard Bill Frisell. Included is the premier of new works commissioned
by Earshot Jazz from Frisell and Malian guitar treasure Boubacar
Traore, a first-ever duo performance with drummer Jack DeJohnette,
and the world premier of Frisell's new quartet with Brazilian
guitarist Vinicius Canturaria, Greek oud player Christos, and
Malian percussionist Sidiki Camera. As always, visiting artists
will conduct workshops and master classes in area education centers.
Tickets are on sale through Earshot Jazz and all Ticket Master
locations. Complete concert information is available by going
to kplu.org and clicking on the Earshot banner, or by calling
the Jazz Festival hotline at 206-547-9787.
KPLU
Host Honored
The
KPLU and NPR news departments have been widely recognized for
their excellence. But for a radio reporter to receive an award
from the Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) is unusual.
Most awards from the IRE Association go to print reporters since
investigative work in radio journalism is rare. We are very proud
to announce that Weekend Edition host and reporter Ingrid Lobet's
exceptional work has led to recognition for her reporting by the
IRE. The IRE is a nonprofit professional organization
dedicated to
training and supporting investigative journalists and is based
at the Missouri School of Journalism.
The story,
"Beneath Native Land: Occidental Petroleum in South America,"
was originally produced for NPR's Living on Earth. Ingrid took
listeners on an extraordinary journey into the heart of the South
American jungle. Her report exposed the effects of Occidental
Petroleum's oil drilling on native lands. On a tight budget and
journeying through the most horrendous conditions, she uncovered
water contamination and environmental damage caused by a major
U.S. oil company.
In commenting
on the award, KPLU News Director Erin Hennessey remarked: "Our
listeners and staff know of the brilliant work Ingrid does. This
recognition is particularly significant, as she is only one of
very few radio reporters who have been honored by the IRE."
Underwriter
Spotlight
There
are hundreds of corporate supporters on KPLU. These businesses
and organizations support public radio for a variety of reasons.
Seattle Theatre Group (STG) supports KPLU because they recognize
the natural match between KPLU listeners and STG's
concert and
theatergoers.
Seattle
Theatre Group is a not-for-profit organization formed in 1992.
The original purpose of STG was to restore, upgrade, operate and
maintain Seattle's historic theatres. Seattle Theatre Group now
presents entertainment, cultural events and educational programs
at Seattle's historic Paramount and Moore Theatres.
Consistent
with its status as a premier performing arts organization, STG
features many series: Broadway, Off-Broadway, Dance, Jazz, Silent
Movie Mondays, Family Arts aLIVE, and Contemporary Works. The
Broadway series presented on the Paramount's stage is coordinated
through a partnership between STG and Clear Channel Entertainment,
another supporter of KPLU.
Does KPLU
work for them? STG has observed a huge response from their underwriting
on KPLU. "We definitely know that KPLU listeners go to our theatres,"
says Patrick Harrison, Director of Marketing and Communication
for Seattle Theatre Group. Patrick explained that theatergoers
consistently mention KPLU as the station they listen to. Patrick
feels sure that KPLU and Seattle Theatre Group share an audience
with similar interests. We agree, Patrick!

Election
Coverage from KPLU
KPLU's
Northwest News Team will again this year provide listeners with
a two-week, in-depth election series leading up to the General
Election on November 6. The series will include stories on the
race for Mayor in Seattle and Tacoma; the three state-wide initiatives;
and a look at the twenty-first Legislative race which could break
the tie in the state House of Representatives. We will also explore
other election-related issues and provide interviews and commentaries
aimed at informing Washington voters. Listen for our reporters,
beginning October 22 through November 2, on KPLU's Morning Edition
and All Things Considered.

the Programming You Value

wonder about volunteering at KPLU during a fund drive? Now
is the time to sign up and help. Volunteering during the KPLU
fall fund drive will be fun! Meet other KPLU listeners, get
a behind-the-scenes peek at the radio station and enjoy snacks
and light meals as you give us a hand answering telephones.
Please call Listener Support at 800-677-5758 during business
hours. Other times call the Listener Support line at 253-535-8386
and leave a message indicating the times you are available
along with your name, address, phone number and e-mail (if
you have one). We will contact you to confirm your schedule.

We have a
pledge for you! In exchange for your renewal or pledge of support
to KPLU,
we pledge to keep you entertained and informed. Our new program
changes give you more locally produced news, jazz and blues. These
programs are what make KPLU a truly unique local resource worthy
of your support.
Due to the
success of the Seattle Mariners and the strong possibility that
the team will be involved in post-season play, KPLU has scheduled
the fall fund drive for November, kicking off with Web Wednesday
on November 7. On this day we pledge to keep interruptions to
a minimum while you pledge your support to KPLU online. Pledging
online is fast, easy, safe and secure and it helps keep the on-air
drives short. Online pledging is made possible through the generosity
of Wells Fargo Bank. From November 8 - 12, the KPLU fund drive
is in full swing on the air. This is your chance to support us
and receive great pledge premiums such as restaurant gift certificates,
books, CDs and more.
Of course
you can renew or pledge anytime. Call 800-677-5758 during business
hours or go online to kplu.org.
Meet
Nick Vroman
If you've
volunteered at either of the last two pledge drives at KPLU, you
may recognize Nick
Vroman.
He's the "new" guy in the Listener Support Services Department.
Like the rest of the crew at KPLU during pledge drive time, Nick
is doing a little bit of everything to help make the drive successful.
When the
frenzy of the drive is over though, he's involved with the day-to-day
work of customer service, managing the member mailings, and the
myriad details of the behind-the-scenes work at KPLU. However,
when he's not slaving in front of an unforgiving computer monitor,
Nick has had a bit of a second life as a songwriter and musician.
Though not a jazz player, Nick has spent a number of years performing
with various groups and currently is a solo musician and plays
a mean ukulele with Hawaiian music neo-traditionalists, Na Hilahila
Boys.
Nick has
had a run-in with some public radio notoriety by having a piece
he composed used as background music for a story on This American
Life.
"I had given
my CD to my buddy, Mary Wiltenberg. You may know of her because
she is mentioned in Radio - An Illustrated Guide, the This American
Life comic book. Well, it was kind of a lark. I didn't know what
to expect. But one Friday as I was actually getting ready to settle
down and listen to the program, Mary called from Chicago about
a half an hour before the show was to start and said, 'Make sure
you're listening tonight, because your piece is going to be on.'
What can I say? I was pretty jazzed. I called and emailed all
my friends and family. About 20 seconds of my song was used and
though most people probably would have missed it, I was proud
to be part of the program."
So, when
you're listening to This American Life (now on Sundays at 1 p.m.),
listen closely. You may hear Nick.
